Overview

WP6 focuses on the blue-carbon-estuary-habitat aspects of the OAF and aims at ascertaining how the OAF can be utilised to measure changes in blue carbon metrics and take mitigation actions for any identified declines with the aim of restoring estuary habitats for carbon offsetting.

WORK PROGRAMME 6 - MILESTONES

Work Programme Lead: Professor Janine Adams

WP Lead Secundus: Anusha Rajkaran

Milestone 6.A assesses the viability of a carbon-offset mechanism for South Africa’s Blue Carbon ecosystems.

Milestone 6.B applies the Experimental Ecosystem Accounting approach developed for South African estuaries to the Algoa Bay systems (includes extent, condition, pressure and ecosystem service accounts).

Milestone 6.C estimates carbon stocks and assesses short and long-term threats to these stocks at selected study sites.

Milestone 6.D investigates the feasibility of restoring estuarine habitats with the goal of increasing carbon storage capacity. Appropriate implementation strategies for restoration with the goal of increasing carbon storage capacity will be described for South African estuaries.

Milestone 6.E integrates WP6 findings to provide input to the study site ocean accounting reports.
